Richard Potokar

Mr. Potokar has 35 years of professional architectural experience. In 1987, he founded his own architectural practice focusing on Health Care, Institutional and Commercial projects. Prior to forming his own firm, Mr. Potokar was a Principal and Director of Design for the national firm of Hansen Lind Meyer. Along with his experience at three other noted Chicago firms, including Perkins + Will, he has served as a Project Director, Manager, Designer and Project Architect on a multitude of facilities.

Mr. Potokar is a 1974 honor graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago with a bachelor degree in Architecture, major in Design. He is a registered Architect in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin, is NCARB certified and is a 25-year member of the American Institute of Architects, Chicago Chapter. He is a LEED Accredited Professional and a member of the United States Green Building Council. He is also a member of the National Fire Protection Association and the International Code Council.

Awards include an AIA Interior Architecture Award, a NAIOP Industrial Category Award, a Graham Foundation Honorable Mention, Chicago Bar Association Young Architect Award, Design Thesis Award / UIC, and Women’s Architectural League Foundation Award. He was also the winner of the South Central Bell Telephone Headquarters National Competition. He has contributed to the Department of Urban Renewal on Evaluation of Industrial Centers in Chicago, served on the Illinois Council AIA Awards Committee, reviewed architectural student presentations at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and lectured at The Merchandise Mart and the Chicago Architectural Club.

His work has been published in Progressive Architecture, Architectural Record, Architecture, CCAIA Focus, Modern HealthCare, and Contract Interiors magazines; and Architecture in Perspective V, the Chicago Architectural Annual, the Chicago Architectural Club Journal & the Chicago Tribune. His projects have been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Chicago Athenaeum, the Chicago Architectural Club Gallery, the Archi-Center and the Van Staaten Gallery in Chicago, the Walker Art Museum in Minneapolis, Grinnel College in Iowa, Kansas State University, and Barat College in Illinois.

Richard A.M. Potokar Inc. was founded in 1987 in Riverside, IL. as a design / service firm in the practice of Architecture & Planning. Over the years, Interior Design services were added to complement our work. Extensive experience in Institutional and Commercial facilities allows us to provide creative design solutions for our clients that are both functional and aesthetically attractive, yet cost effective. The design approach to each client’s project is tailored specifically to the aspects of the client, building program, and site considerations.

We strongly believe in the team approach and the involvement of the client in the design process. Through this interaction, the exchange of ideas allows us to design a project that is truly responsive to the client’s needs. This process is carried out to its fullest capability through the personal and “hands-on” attention of Rich Potokar.
